Academic
:
I am a graduate of Azusa Pacific University, California with a
B.A. in Religion and Bible. I did my Masters of Divinity at Fuller
Theological Seminary. My doctorate is from Western Theological
Seminary in Michigan. I am presently doing adjunct teaching at
Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary in their Master's Program.
Church
Ministry :
I am the senior pastor of a church in Michigan that has grown
from 300 to over 1,500 worshipers in the past ten years. The vision
of our church is to equip all believers to enter into meaningful
outreach that fits their God-given style. This church has transformed
from being introspective and focused on "caring for our own" to
being intentionally evangelistic!
Speaking
:
Over the past four years I have presented twice at the Willow
Creek Evangelism Conferences. In 2002 I brought my Frontline Evangelism
Team (Our core evangelism leaders) and we did a featured breakout
session in partnership with Mark Mittelberg. Two years ago I did
a breakout and also took part in a main session that was led by
Mark. I do evangelism training here in the US and also in Europe.
My church allows me four months of the year to travel and speak
so I am able to do extensive evangelism training. My wife and
I will be speaking at both of the National Pastor's Conventions
in 2005. I will also be speaking at three events on evangelism
and church revitalization in Scotland this year.
Writing
: My wife and I have written, or co-written over thirty
small group studies for Zondervan Publishing. Many of these have
been done in partnership with Bill Hybels and John Ortberg. We
have also written a book for people who are trying to find their
way into a local church. The title is " How to Find a Church
You Can Really Love ." It was published by Zondervan in 2003.
I was Mark Mittelberg's research assistant on his book, Building
a Contagious Church. While I worked with Mark I interviewed leaders
from over 100 highly evangelistic churches from all over the world
and wrote accounts of how they have been effective in their outreach
efforts. Most of these were included in Mark's book. In 2000,
Zondervan invited me to write a 90 page section for pastors in
a book titles, " This We Believe: The Good News of Jesus Christ
for the World ." Other contributing authors on this pastor's
edition include: Ravi Zacharias, J.I. Packer, Thomas oden, Lee
Strobel and Joe Stowell. I am in the process of writing a book
on the evangelistic potential of the church called, " Seismic
Shifts: The little changes that make the BIG Difference in your
Life ."
